About the Photographer

Gabriel Carlin

I was born and raised in Saint Helena, California. I began photography at a young age after receiving my first digital camera for Christmas. It was an Olympus FE-280, which is a basic point-and-shoot camera. At first, photography was just about documenting events in my life. I would take pictures during family trips, when I was with friends, and macro shots of items that caught my eye.
During high school, I purchased a Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ50, a bridge digital camera (in between a DSLR and a point-and-Shoot Camera). I was still documenting my life, but I started experimenting with different angles, settings, and lighting to enhance or alter the meaning of my photographs.
Senior year of high school, I updated to a Nikon D60 and also became fascinated with film photography. I started using my mother's old Canon TLB film camera. I took a photography class, where I learned to develop my own black and white film, as well as improve my technique.
I have not had any formal photography education. I have learned various photographic skills and techniques through friends, internet resources, and independent exploration.

"No photographer is as good as the simplest camera."
